That is a great question, and I could have been more clear in the article.

It requires 10 years of IDR payments, or more accurately 120 months because they don’t have to be consecutive. Payments on other IDR plans before switching to SAVE wiill count.

Many borrowers will be able to take advantage of the one-time IDR count adjustment, switch into SAVE, and get their remaining debt forgiven because they have 10 years worth of payments and a small enough balance.
