Our situation is a little unique, so I don’t know if this will help anyone else, but here is our reason: We don’t need the deductible. Basically, we are living, working and paying taxes in another country. Uncle Sam, therefore, already allows us almost $100,000 in foreign income exclusion, so we are paying no taxes. So the student loan interests offer no benefits but are draining away our earnings.
